They say guests remember two things from a wedding – the bride and the food.
While a wedding caterer can’t help you pick out your dream dress, fancy hair do, or blingy shoes, they can make or break your reception. It’s important to ask good questions when interviewing wedding caterers because you don’t get a test run! Make sure the caterer is legit and can deliver on what they are promising!
We’ve put together a list of questions you should be asking to narrow down your list.
Is the caterer licensed?
Why is this important to you? A licensed caterer is legit! It means they’ve gone through the process to meet local health department standards and that they carry liability insurance in case something happens at the reception.
Can the caterer provide references?
Why is this important to you? Online reviews and testimonials are great! However, ask the caterer if you can call or email a past client. Hearing from an actual human will boost your confidence in the caterer. And if the caterer is not willing to let you do this, consider it a sign and run the other way.
Is the caterer working another wedding or event that same day?
Why this is important to you? It doesn’t have to be a deal breaker if the caterer has another event on the same day. But, make sure your wedding will get the wait staff and attention it deserves.
Does the caterer provide a wait staff for full-service weddings?
Why is this important to you? Some caterers only do buffet style, while others only do full-service. First, clarify that the caterer will be able to provide the wedding serving style you want. Then, ask if they will provide the wait staff necessary to serve your guests. If not, you’ll be responsible for finding and paying extra folks.
Does the caterer provide plates, linens, flatware, etc.?
Why is this important to you? If your caterer doesn’t provide plates, napkins, and flatware, you’ll need to rent them separately from another company. You need to know what exactly is included in the quote in order to compare apples to apples
Will the caterer accommodate any allergies or dietary restrictions?
Why is this important to you? Not everyone has the same eating habits. Some of your guests may need dinner or appetizer options that are gluten, peanut, or egg free for example. It’s nice to ask this question to a caterer up front to know if he or she is willing to go the extra mile for your guests.
Are there any extra fees that could make the price higher?
Why is this important to you? Extra fees can mean hundred of dollars that you didn’t plan on paying. Make sure your caterer is up-front about fees that could impact the bottom line.
How does the caterer handle gratuity?
Why is this important to you? Again, budget is key. You’ll want to make sure you not only pay your caterer fairly, but that you stick to the overall wedding budget. Knowing a general gratuity amount can help you plan better.
Will the caterer coordinate drop off and clean up with the day-of coordinator?
Why is this important to you? The last thing you need is the caterer bugging you an hour before the wedding about where to set up. Make sure the caterer is okay coordinating with the day-of coordinator on arrival time and set up as well as clean up afterwards. As a bonus, make sure the caterer will clean up appropriately! You should not be responsible for cleaning up after your caterer.
When does the caterer need a final head count?
Why is this important? You’ll need to know when to have this information to your caterer, which will help you plan your RSVP date for your wedding invitations.
